Water reuse in greenhouses: what to assess first

Recovering water can improve resource use in crop production. Each system requires an assessment of water quality, plant needs and the treatment required before reuse.
Collection and recirculation
Roofs and gutters can collect rainwater. In suitable installations, drainage can be recovered for analysis, filtration and treatment before returning to the irrigation circuit.
Control and maintenance
Salts, nutrients and sanitation risks need monitoring, alongside filter and tank maintenance. The result is assessed by comparing consumption and operating conditions at the facility.
What to gather before enquiring
- Water source
- Crop and current irrigation system
- Volumes used and recovered, if known
- Available water analyses
- Existing storage and treatment facilities
